Yesterday was all about West Virginia Wildlife! Campers spent the day learning about the amazing animals that call our state home through hands-on activities and interactive games.
We kicked off the morning with games that kept everyone moving while teaching important lessons about wildlife. Campers played a predator vs. prey freeze tag game and took part in a bear foraging activity. Each camper became a bear searching for food and resources, with some taking on the role of bears with special challenges. Using paper bags to collect items bears might find in the wild, campers quickly discovered how difficult survival can be. Some “bears” didn’t find enough food or water, while others accidentally ingested “trash.” By the end of the activity, none of our bears survived to the next day—a powerful lesson about the many challenges wild animals face every day.
We were also excited to welcome our special guest, Miss Riley from the WV DNR! Campers learned about native West Virginia wildlife, including foxes, turtles, snakes, and more. They especially enjoyed meeting Jerry the corn snake and Shelba and Jeep, two rescued box turtles who now help teach others about wildlife conservation. (Look for those photos coming soon)
To wrap up the day, campers became junior scientists by dissecting owl pellets and identifying the different bones they discovered inside. It was a fascinating hands-on experience and a favorite activity for many!
We’re looking forward to Day 4, when we’ll explore West Virginia Arts & Culture. We can’t wait to welcome the Huntington Museum of Art to WV Camp!
