Spanning 110 serene acres near Huntington’s Southeast Hills, Spring Hill Cemetery serves as a hallowed resting place for many of Huntington’s most notable figures and families. Among its significant gravesites is the Marshall Memorial, where six members of the 1970 Marshall University Football Team are laid to rest. These individuals were among the 75 players, coaches, supporters, and crew members who tragically perished in a plane crash, leaving a lasting impact on the community.

The cemetery is also home to the Spring Hill Memorial Bell Tower, a tribute to Veterans, lost loved ones, and victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. At its base lies the grave of Dr. Paul Ambrose, a Huntington native and rising star in public health who was killed in the attack on the Pentagon. Dr. Ambrose’s legacy lives on through Huntington’s Paul Ambrose Trail for Health (PATH), a citywide wellness trail that winds through Spring Hill Cemetery, offering a tranquil setting for runners and walkers to connect with history and nature.

Spring Hill Cemetery honors its role as a historical site, with gravesites dating back to the Civil War era. The grounds include one of the state’s most notable Veterans sections, where the Stars and Stripes proudly fly year-round. Each Veteran’s grave is adorned with a flag on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, reflecting Huntington’s distinction of having the highest number of Veterans per capita in West Virginia.

In early September, the cemetery transforms into a breathtaking tribute with the Healing Field®, featuring nearly 3,000 flags to honor the victims of September 11. This annual event invites Veterans, families, and community members to reflect and remember loved ones in a moving tribute to resilience and unity.

Each December, we remember and honor the veterans buried at Spring Hill with the Wreaths Across America program. Contact Wreaths Across Huntington to sponsor a wreath any day of the year. For a monthly contribution of just $17, you can provide 12 wreaths for veterans.

For history enthusiasts, the cemetery offers a guided walking tour map, available at the office, which highlights the gravesites of Civil War generals, prominent Huntington families, and pioneers in education, politics, business, and faith.

Whether you come to reflect, honor, or learn, Spring Hill Cemetery remains a cherished space of reverence, rich with stories of the past and inspiration for the present.
