Fall 2007 has been a time for additional
development to Harveytown Park - the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation
District's
and the City of Huntington's newest neighborhood park. Jim McClelland,
Director/Secretary of the Park District, reports that park district crews
constructed a concrete memorial plaza upon which are two park benches. Made
in the park shop, the materials for one bench were donated by the
Neighborhood Institute of Huntington in commemoration of the late Marvin
Fuller, sometimes called The Mayor of Harveytown,
who was an early advocate of the park, while the materials for the other
bench were donated by the Good Samaritan Youth Group in cooperation with the
Harveytown Area Improvement Association in commemoration of the late Mrs.
Dorothy Newman, who helped the district procure the land which she owned.
The plaza will contain plaques, not yet received, designating the
memorials, and plaques identifying the donors will also be mounted on, or
near, each bench. Concrete animals have also been installed along the
pathway leading from the shelter complex to the plaza. Three hardwood
trees, which have been ordered, will be planted adjacent to the memorial
plaza, being the first trees to adorn the park grounds. Plans are under way
to plant additional trees next spring.
Also added to the park's playground, the last week in October, by park
district personnel, were a dual swing set and a dish swing. These augment
the barn climbing element which is the signature apparatus.
Harveytown
Park has become one of the busier neighborhood parks, observes Mr.
McClelland.
The shelter building has been reserved by
permit 42 times since April, and daily it accommodated individuals and
groups eating lunch and taking shade while children rambled on the
playground. The park is a beauty; the Harveytown residents take great pride
in it, and we hope each year to keep pecking away at the Master Plan which
has been approved by the residents and the Park District. Harveytown Park
is an example of close cooperation between the City of Huntington, the Park
District and state and federal agencies, and the private sector. All have
contributed to its development.
We're
looking forward to an event next spring when those who have assisted with
these improvements will be recognized and when the residents of Harveytown
will have a gala picnic in the park. Meanwhile, we encourage everyone to
come to the park, use it, and have a good time.
